Construction of the new phase of the WAY Cáceres retail park has begun on the plot next to El Junquillo and the former slaughterhouse. Developer Kronos announced the start of work, beginning with the development of the site ahead of the construction of the retail buildings. On October 2, Cáceres City Council reported the first earthworks and noted that the project has the necessary permits.
Investment and area figures announced by Kronos
The company puts the planned total investment at €42 million and the retail park’s gross leasable area at more than 22,000 square metres. This area includes the 3,000 m² Decathlon store, which has been open since April 2024. The project also includes 16 stores and five retail units.
Kronos plans an offering that will combine retail, dining and entertainment. So far, the developer has not announced which operators will occupy the new spaces, although it has said it plans to bring in national and international brands, some of which are not currently present in Cáceres. The final mix of offerings will depend on the commercial agreements reached.
Updated schedule following delays
The entire development is scheduled to open in spring–summer 2028, according to the timetable announced by Kronos. This is an estimate, not a confirmed opening date. The project was presented in 2021, and the initial schedule pointed to an opening in spring 2022. After Decathlon opened in 2024, there had been little progress on the site, according to information published by local media.
Cáceres Mayor Rafa Mateos welcomed the resumption of work and described the project as «another project that is getting unstuck». He also said that the City Council was aware that construction had begun and that the work had the relevant permits. For its part, the developer announced that the work would proceed according to the planned milestones, without providing a more detailed execution schedule at this stage.
A phased development
Decathlon’s existing operations are included in the announced area, while the rest of the retail park must be completed through the new construction work and the gradual arrival of operators. Therefore, the investment, area and opening figures refer to the project announced by Kronos; the schedule and future retail offering may be confirmed as construction progresses.
