A new cold-chain facility
Consum plans to invest €100 million in a 50,000 m² logistics platform in Barcelona’s Zona Franca. The center will be dedicated to fresh, chilled and frozen products and aims to strengthen the cooperative’s supply capacity in Catalonia.
To develop the project, Consum has signed an agreement with the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona and Vidriería Rovira for the transfer of the lease on an 80,000 m² plot previously occupied by Damm’s bottle factory. The space will be available to the cooperative for 30 years, with the possibility of an extension to a total of 50 years.
Planned schedule and employment
The cooperative expects to begin adapting the space to the platform’s needs in late 2027. Operations are scheduled to begin in late 2029. These are dates announced for the project: work and operations have not yet begun.
Consum estimates that the facility will generate 150 jobs during its first five years of operation and has announced that it will give priority to workers from Vidriería Rovira. The announcement does not specify the terms of those jobs or how many hires would be covered by that priority.
Strengthening the logistics network in Catalonia
The new platform would join the two logistics facilities Consum already has in the province of Barcelona, from which it supplies its stores in Catalonia: one measuring 42,000 m² in the Zona Franca and another measuring 11,800 m² in El Prat de Llobregat.
The investment is part of the cooperative’s commercial expansion in Catalonia. Consum plans to open seven company-owned stores there during the fiscal year referred to in its announcement, as well as add thirteen Charter franchises. The company presents the new facility as a response to the growth of its network and as a way to strengthen logistics services in the region; for now, the schedule and job creation remain company forecasts.
