MercadoLibre jumps sharply after Bolsonaro’s first-round lead in Brazil

The company’s shares rose more than 8% during the session, as the market anticipated a possible shift in Brazil’s economic direction. Analysts distinguish the effect on short-term valuation from the business’s operating fundamentals.

MercadoLibre shares rose sharply on Wall Street on Monday, October 5, 2026, after Flávio Bolsonaro overtook Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the first round of Brazil’s presidential election. The result set up a runoff between the two candidates: it did not determine who will govern the country, but it led investors to adjust their expectations about Brazil’s possible economic direction.

During the session, MercadoLibre shares rose as much as 7.9% to more than 9%, according to the different trading points reported in news coverage. The company, founded in Argentina, generates nearly 55% of its revenue in Brazil, its largest market. That exposure helps explain why political news from Brazil had an immediate effect on its valuation in New York.

The market anticipates a possible economic shift

Bolsonaro received 47.03% of valid votes and Lula 45.16%, according to the results cited in news coverage. Markets interpreted the opposition candidate’s lead as a sign that the likelihood could increase of a government with an orientation more favorable to fiscal discipline and business. That reading also boosted other Brazilian and Argentine assets, although the final outcome will depend on the runoff.

The movement was not limited to MercadoLibre. Adecoagro, which also generates a significant share of its revenue in Brazil, rose more than 7% at certain points in the session. In Argentina, shares posted broad gains: the Merval rose around 4% in pesos and more when measured in dollars, while Global bonds advanced and country risk declined. The figures varied across news coverage and depending on the reference time.

Brazil exposure matters, but does not determine the business on its own

The stock market reaction reflects expectations about the company’s valuation, not an immediate change in its operations. Mauricio Villacorta, an investment strategist at IOL, said that a potential Bolsonaro victory would not necessarily have a strong impact on MercadoLibre’s operations: e-commerce and digital financial services also depend on structural trends such as the growth of online shopping and access to banking.

However, Brazil’s importance to the company’s revenue means that the country’s economic outlook can influence investors’ perceptions. Villacorta said the market had started from a scenario more favorable to Lula and that Bolsonaro’s lead increased the probability that traders assigned to an opposition victory. He also warned that some of this optimism might already be reflected in prices: in that case, a Bolsonaro victory would add less momentum, while a different outcome could prompt a correction.

Alan Feldman, a research strategist at Criteria, described a possible Bolsonaro victory in the runoff as a catalyst for the stock, with some caveats. In his view, investors expect more orthodox fiscal policy to reduce Brazil’s risk premium and, with it, long-term interest rates. But he said the effect would persist only if there were concrete fiscal progress.

Argentine assets also felt the repercussions

Brazil is Argentina’s main trading partner. For that reason, news coverage noted that a stronger real against the dollar could improve Argentina’s relative competitiveness and give the government’s exchange-rate strategy more room. This is a possible economic transmission, not a guaranteed outcome: it depends on exchange-rate movements and other factors that are not determined by a single day of market activity.

For companies, the episode shows how exposure to a regional market can turn an election result into a valuation factor, even without immediate changes in sales or strategy. In MercadoLibre’s case, the relevant signal will be whether the expectations that drove its share price translate into concrete economic measures and operating conditions. The runoff, scheduled for October 25 according to one news report, was still pending at the close of the session.

The Burro Canaglia fire case moves to the intermediate phase

A Madrid judge has ordered proceedings to continue under the abbreviated procedure in the case concerning the 2023 fire that caused three deaths. The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the private prosecutors have ten days to request an oral trial or dismissal; the decision is neither a conviction nor, by itself, the opening of a trial.
