A visit to learn about Walqa’s ecosystem

The ambassadors of the Member States of the European Union visited Walqa Technology Park during their stay in Aragon. The tour was attended by Eva Valle, Regional Minister for Economy, Competitiveness and Employment; Lorena Orduna, Mayor of Huesca; and Carlos Ortas, the park’s managing director.

The delegation learned about the Aragon Gastronomic Innovation Centre and the facilities of Podoactiva, a company working in biomechanics and health. The agenda thus focused on different applications of innovation, from food to business and healthcare.

More companies and activity at the park

Figures released during the visit reflect Walqa’s growth: the park has gone from 51 companies in 2022 to 90 today, and has more than 900 workers. These figures describe the site’s development, although on their own they do not detail which sectors account for the employment or how the growth is distributed.

Valle said the visit had allowed the European representatives to learn about Aragon’s economic transformation and the ecosystem that, she explained, has developed following the arrival of data centres. The regional minister also presented Walqa as part of the community’s technological drive.

Orduna called the park an “innovation hub” and described it as a successful model. The mayor also highlighted Huesca’s development opportunities and said the visit could help raise the city’s profile and create future opportunities.

Technology and development beyond major cities

Ireland’s ambassador, Brian Glynn, argued that technology can help regions attract skilled jobs, retain young talent and create new sources of economic activity. He also welcomed the application of innovation in Huesca across a range of fields, including gastronomy, food, biomechanics and health.

The visit positioned Walqa as a showcase for Huesca’s business and technological activity before an international delegation. The representatives’ statements express expectations about the potential of the park and the city; they do not in themselves imply investment commitments or future results.
