Jaguar targets North America as key market for the Type 01

Jaguar Land Rover has positioned **the United States** as the priority market for the launch of the **Type 01**, its new four-door electric grand tourer, following the positive reception of the prototype in **Canada** and the US market itself. With a starting price of **£130,000** (approx. €153,000) and a power output of **1,030 hp**, the brand aims to attract a new generation of luxury buyers, betting on design and exclusivity amid the uncertainty of electric vehicle demand in the region.

Presentation in New York and market strategy

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) officially presented the Type 01 in New York, a venue choice that underscores the strategic importance the company places on the American continent. According to statements from its executives, the United States is considered the most important market for this model, while Canada has shown a positive reception of the prototype; this orientation shifts attention away from Europe and China, which have historically been pillars of the brand.

This orientation responds to the positive reception the Type 00 prototype received in the North American region. Rawson Glover, Jaguar's chief executive officer, explained that the audience in that area particularly values the size, presence, and status of vehicles. Glover noted: “I can perfectly imagine that car in Southern California”. The brand seeks to position itself in a specific niche: above the German premium market (Audi, BMW, Mercedes) and below ultra-luxury firms like Rolls-Royce, offering a proposal of fewer units, higher prices, and a greater emotional component.

A polarizing design as the main argument

The Type 01 breaks with the brand's traditional aesthetics. With a length of 5.2 meters, an ultra-long hood, and the absence of a rear window, the vehicle adopts proportions that some critics have described as “almost caricatured”. Jaguar has confirmed that the design does not seek to please everyone, but rather to attract a profile of young, urban customers interested in individuality, primarily millennials and Generation Z with high purchasing power.

The marketing strategy has evolved from the initial high-fashion campaign to focus on the driving experience and design, minimizing the discourse centered exclusively on electrification. Glover stated that the customer will buy the car for how it looks and drives, not just because it is electric: “We won't sell it as 'come buy the Jaguar EV', but 'come buy the Jaguar Type 01, there is nothing like it'”. This approach seeks to validate the purchase through exclusivity and engineering, rather than through battery technology.

Technical specifications and positioning

Under the hood, the Type 01 is the most powerful production Jaguar in history. It is built on the proprietary electric platform JEA (Jaguar Electric Architecture), which is not shared with the brand's SUVs. Its main features include:

  • Power: 1,030 hp and 1,365 Nm of maximum torque.
  • Performance: Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.
  • Range: Up to 720 km in the WLTP cycle and 644 km in the EPA cycle.
  • Charging: Charging capacity of up to 350 kW, allowing the recovery of 321 km of range in 13 minutes.
  • Starting price: £130,000 in the UK (approx. €153,000).

The 118 kWh usable battery is designed with a specific layout to keep the center of gravity low and free up space in the cabin, sacrificing the vehicle's height to preserve its sporty proportions.

Risks and context of the electric market

Jaguar's bet is not without risks. The luxury electric sedan market in the United States faces significant challenges:

  1. Preference for SUVs: The US market has shown a strong preference for SUVs and large vehicles, reducing demand for sedans.
  2. Drop in EV sales: Electric vehicle sales in the US fell by 24% in the first half of 2026, according to data cited by specialized press.
  3. Established competition: Rivals like the Lucid Air, although technically well-regarded, have not achieved notable sales figures in the region.

Despite this, JLR maintains that the electric mechanism is only one of the priorities for buyers at this level, ranking eighth behind design, materials, and the driving experience. The brand calculates that 20% of potential customers will discard any vehicle without an internal combustion engine, but it trusts the remaining market, betting on innovation and the brand's heritage to differentiate itself.

Production and investment in the UK

Although the target market is North America, the Type 01 will be designed, developed, and manufactured in the United Kingdom. Production will begin in 2027 at the Solihull plant, while batteries and propulsion units will be manufactured in Wolverhampton. JLR has already invested £11.5 billion of its five-year program of £15 billion to £18 billion, allocating the majority to British operations. Almost 9,000 employees at Solihull have received specific training for the manufacture of electric vehicles, consolidating the brand's role as the only fully electric one within the JLR group, while Range Rover and other brands will maintain a mix of technologies.
