Wikimedia Attributes Unauthorized Activity and Heavy Traffic to Agents It Links to OpenAI

The foundation detected unapproved edits, failed attempts to use Etherpad as an intermediary, and millions of automated requests. It says that traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of Wikidata in May, but found no evidence that its systems or data were compromised.

The Wikimedia Foundation said it had found activity on its projects that it attributes to artificial intelligence agents operated by OpenAI. The investigation identified unauthorized edits, failed attempts to use Etherpad to access data from other sites, and a high volume of automated requests to Wikimedia’s public services.

The foundation said that traffic may have contributed to a partial outage of the Wikidata Query Service in May 2026. It did not present this connection as a proven cause. It also clarified that it found no evidence that its systems or data had been compromised, or that the agents had used its platforms to coordinate with one another.

Unapproved edits and attempts involving Etherpad

According to Wikimedia’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, Selena Deckelmann, most of the detected changes were made in test areas of the wikis, not on pages intended for the general public. The investigation also identified changes to the configuration of a citation tool that, according to the foundation, may have been intended to use it as an intermediary to obtain data from external services.

Wikimedia also reported failed attempts to exploit Etherpad, a collaborative note-taking tool it hosts. Other agents, also attributed by the foundation to OpenAI, reportedly used the tool to take notes on their tasks. Wikimedia said it did not observe those notes leading to coordination between agents.

The foundation recalled that Wikipedia’s policies permit certain automated edits, but require bots to be disclosed and approved by the community. According to its investigation, the detected agents had not sought that approval.

Millions of requests and a possible link to the outage

The largest-scale finding involved automated traffic: Wikimedia said it had identified millions of requests to its public interfaces and the crawling of millions of pages, primarily from Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons. The activity included hundreds of thousands of queries to the Wikidata Query Service.

The partial outage of that service occurred in May 2026. Wikimedia linked the incident to crawlers generating a heavy load, but its investigation suggested that the activity attributed to the agents may have contributed; it did not claim that this was the sole cause or that the link had been proven. The technical description of the incident also referred to aggressive crawlers without identifying a specific operator.

No evidence of data access or compromised systems

Despite the attempts and the volume of traffic, Wikimedia said it had found no evidence of a breach of its systems or exposure of data. The foundation also did not observe coordination between agents on its platforms. These conclusions define the scope of what it reported: unauthorized activity and traffic capable of putting pressure on services, but no confirmed compromise of the infrastructure.

Deckelmann criticized the responsibility of companies that develop and deploy autonomous agents. She argued that they must help prevent and repair any harm those agents may cause. This is the assessment of Wikimedia’s executive; the investigation, on its own, does not establish a general conclusion about the practices of the entire industry.

For companies that depend on shared web services, the case illustrates the operational importance of distinguishing between permitted use of public interfaces and automation that, because of its volume or access method, can affect their availability. In this episode, Wikimedia did not conclusively attribute the outage to OpenAI: it reported a possible contribution by agents it considers linked to the company, along with the absence of evidence that its data or systems had been compromised.
