The United Kingdom Government appointed Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Morgan Stanley, NatWest, and RBC Capital Markets as joint lead managers for the Digital Gilt Instrument (DIGIT), a pilot to issue a native digital sovereign bond. The designation prepares the project for an issuance scheduled for the first quarter of 2027; it does not mean the bond has already been issued.
The appointment, announced by the Treasury's Economic Secretary, Lucy Rigby, follows a competitive selection process. According to the information published about the pilot, the banks will support the preparation of the issuance and the relationship with investors. The announcement does not detail how tasks will be distributed among the six entities.
A trial of issuance and settlement on a distributed ledger
DIGIT will test the use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) throughout the bond's lifecycle, including its issuance and settlement. The instrument is proposed as native digital: it would be generated within the pilot's digital infrastructure, rather than merely representing via a token a bond previously issued in a conventional system.
The platform will operate within the Digital Securities Sandbox, the British testing environment for digital securities infrastructure. HSBC was selected in February as the DLT platform provider and is also among the joint lead managers. Available information does not specify the financial terms of the issuance, such as its amount or yield.
A pilot separate from regular gilt operations
The project will be developed through a separate channel from ordinary gilt operations—bonds issued by the British Government—which will continue to function with their usual infrastructure. The intention is to explore how DLT could be applied to sovereign debt, not to announce a replacement of the existing market.
The pilot also seeks to examine the development of a secondary market, although sufficient details about its mechanisms or trading conditions have not been published. Therefore, that objective does not allow concluding that a liquid market for DIGIT already exists.
The issuance remains a future stage of the project. Until then, the announcement confirms who will lead the work with the bond, but it does not yet demonstrate how the infrastructure will function in a real operation or what results the test will yield.
