Average price exceeds €200/MWh
The wholesale electricity market in Spain records an average of €201.99/MWh this Tuesday, October 6, 2.6% higher than the €196.88/MWh recorded the previous day, according to data attributed to the Iberian Energy Market Operator (OMIE) in the coverage consulted.
The average summarizes a day with marked differences between time slots. The price falls during the early afternoon and rises again from the evening, reaching its daily high then.
Afternoon low and early-evening high
The cheapest hour in the wholesale market is expected to be between 14:00 and 15:00, at €151.58/MWh. At the other extreme, the most expensive slot is 20:00 to 21:00, at €271.62/MWh.
The price exceeds €200/MWh for much of the day: it also rises above this level between 7:00 and 10:00 and does so again from 18:00 until the end of the day. The cheapest time slot, therefore, does not mean that wholesale costs are generally low.
The wholesale market price is not the final bill
These amounts correspond to the spot price on the wholesale market and are expressed per megawatt-hour. They are not the final price paid by each consumer: the regulated PVPC tariff includes other components, and free-market tariffs may apply different terms. Therefore, the wholesale price alone does not make it possible to determine how much a particular bill will change.
For businesses, the data provide a reference for the market’s hourly trends, but the impact will depend on their contract and on how the supply price is determined. Shifting consumption to a cheaper wholesale time slot may not translate into the same savings for all users, nor does it guarantee a specific reduction.
